Maximising a challenging site, the house rises over three levels and is carved into the steep cliffside, appearing to be growing out of the rockface; playfully opening up to the sun and sky as you journey upwards. The slender, curved roof gliding over glass walls further enhances the experience of ‘floating’ and weightlessness, mimicking a sail taking off in the wind.

“After the Christchurch earthquakes, we purchased a steep site on Scarborough Hill in Sumner, drawn by its stunning views over Sumner and the ocean. As empty nesters, we wanted to create a simple designed three-bedroom home that would make the most of this beautiful location.
